The Evil Within

Author's Note: This is a response to the first three chapters of Jekyll and Hyde about how everyone has an evil side within themselves, and about the struggle that happens when people want to explore that darker side. The poem was inspired by the quote from chapter three, "I have a very great interest in poor Hyde. I know you have seen him; he told me so; and I fear he was rude. But I do sincerely take a great, a very great interest in that young man."

Constantly struggling, continually resisting
The wicked, dark part of my soul
Trying to escape so relentlessly

My thoughts wander
Wander to that darker side
And for a moment it is free
Free to rome, free to conquer

Conquering my mind
Subduing my thoughts
Opposites under attack

Like an inevitable battle
Good against bad
Light against dark
Fighting so desperately

Tired of the endless combat
Broken, shattered into pieces
Good giving in, giving over

Overpowered by wickedness
Letting myself turn to the shadows
Evil triumphantly reigns
No way of ever going back

  1. This was really good! I think one thing that i liked was how you ended up going about yourself making the reader think it was about them! I think you could have made some of the lines a little shorter or more power thought. But overall good job!

  2. Alex, this was a good poem! I think the concept of struggling with the evil, wrong, or bitter thoughts that enter our minds is something everyone deals with; although maybe on a less intense level than Jekyll...but still! You made this piece relate-able, which was cool. The only thing I would change is maybe the next time you write a creative piece, try to cut out unnecessary words, like and & the, in order to solidify and bring home your main idea -- it'll make the diction even stronger! Nice job!

  3. WOWSERS!! Alex this is awesome, I don't know what your talking about sitting right next to me! You're an awesome writer bro! I especially love how you used the opposites, like light and dark. We see that alot in Jekyl/Hyde (sorry, I'm too lazy to write out the title). Maybe next time you could bring in some specific experiences as apposed to the more general idea you have here. But I think this is awesome! I just love poems:)

  4. This is an amazing poem. I loved the light and dark comparison and how they relate to good and evil. The poem was the perfect length and gave a great picture in the readers mind. Next time try to not repeat in your poems. Other than that great job!
